Fragrance story: Not just for flower children: Patchouli first became known in Europe through its association with shawls and ink imported from India. In fact, Indian shawls and Indian ink were distinguished by the odor of patchouli oil, which has the unusual quality of improving with age. The beautifully woven shawls and ink were packed in patchouli leaves to ward off insects. The scent became well known and was even used as proof of authenticity. Of course, enterprising merchants eventually began scenting their homespun shawls with patchouli leaves and passing them of as true imported fabrics. How wrong!
