The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Mahabaleshwar. Legend has it that the River Kistna is Lord Vishnu himself as a result of a curse on the Trimurtis (the three Hindu Gods named Braham, Vishnu and Shiva) by Savitri, who is the daughter of the Sun God Savitr. The river’s tributaries, Venna and Koyana, are said to be Shiva and Brahma themselves.
