The Body Shop® difference: Our babassu oil from Brazil has had quite a past. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the women “babassu breakers” and their families were forced from their land by the military dictatorship. Families lost their livelihoods and their homes, and countless trees were destroyed to make room for cattle. The women formed the Association of Rural Working Women and fought a 10-year legal battle. Eventually they secured the “Free Babassu” law, giving them the legal rights to go back onto the land and gather the babassu nuts, and preventing the trees from being chopped down.

Shea butter is one of nature's great moisturizers. Ghanaian women have used it for centuries to protect their skin from the dry Saharan winds. So who better to buy ours from than the Tungteiya Shea Butter Association, Northern Ghana. An association of around 400 women from 10 villages, we ensure a fair price for their product. Since trading with The Body Shop the women have been able to dramatically change their lives with water pipes and wells saving hours of water collecting, better housing, medical care, food, and self esteem. Importantly, they are also able to give their children, particularly their daughters, the chance to go to school.

Trade with Coppalj, a co-operative of small-scale producers in north eastern Brazil, has provided a dependable source of income for over a hundred producers from 12 communities in the area. Women are at the center of the babassu story. After 30 years of campaigning against large landowners, the women babassu breakers won legal rights to go onto the land and extract the babassu nuts. This enables them to earn a living while at the same time preserving the forest from being cut down for grazing cattle. The women in the communities continue to play an important part in the ongoing trade in babassu oil, which helps to improve their status and raise self-esteem.
