The Body Shop® difference: Our Community Trade shea butter is sourced from the Tungteiya Shea Butter Association. Tungteiya means “reaching out in friendship” and for this association of 11village women’s groups, it is an important source of income for women in the Tamale area of northern Ghana. The region is very poor and subject to an extreme climate. Rainfall is confined to a three-month rainy season and the average daytime temperature is 86° F, reaching highs of 104° F during the dry season. For the majority of the year, they are unable to grow crops and rely on trade in shea butter or other stored goods to supply their basic needs.
